Even though the fourteen-mile trail from here to Belmont is terrible in places and climbs more than four thousand feet with sheer thousand-foot drops, Joe can make the trip in about three hours. On foot, it was taking me most of the day. I wish I had my mule, Venus, to carry supplies, but she disappeared last winter and has been sighted in Monitor Valley, running with a band of mustangs. I need to go over there to catch her when I have time.
